Naked Cowboys

The title of this post has little to do with this blog other than being one of the most popular search terms that brings people here, only because Ruthie previously wrote about her purchase of a 2008 calendar of naked cowboys. We do trust that you ultimately find what you are really looking for, but [...]

Mass Culture

Dear Diary,
I have let go of Tucker’s enormous box and he has gone off to stroke it lovingly before getting his hand on what is inside.
Meanwhile I am off to watch a game of Association Football in a place called (so I am told) Wigon. How very suitable for a Barrister. I would not like [...]

Turned down for Silk?

Ruthie is truly wondering who on earth has actually got through, since everyone she knows who has applied has got blown out. This is for you.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the exorbitant fees for applying could be channelled into funding for bar students?
Update:
VM is, of course, suitably sympathetic to the plight of these unlucky souls. [...]

Dear Diary,
It may be remembered that I have had occasion previously to discuss the antics of Mr Aamar Anwar, solicitor of the parish of Strathclyde. It is only fair to point out that Mr Anwar was previously quoted in September, a mere 3 months after the bomb attack on Glasgow Airport. So he probably was [...]

Blogitis

By a bizarre co-incidence it appears that both Ruthie and VM are suffering from some strange illness. We’ve both gone to lie down (separately) in darkened rooms and are trying our best not to scratch in the hope it clears up soon.
Dear Diary,
It is alas, too true. I am convinced that my being incommode is [...]

It seems that the Bar Council have scored an own goal of Chamberlainesque proportions in negotiating higher rates of pay for advocates at the expense of litigators, thus leading to an explosion in the number of firms using Solicitor-Advocates with a view to maximising their earnings.
Concern has been expressed by HHJ Peter Collier Q.C. Recorder [...]

The adventures of wiggy

Following Ruthie’s plea for a wig, VM duly dispatched her spare, freshly powdered, via Royal Mail to Ruthie’s ‘umble garret. When wiggy hadn’t arrived two days later Ruthie made some enquiries only to discover that the powder had sent Royal Mail into terrorist alert, and wiggy had been subject to a controlled explosion as a [...]

‘Ere wig

Ruthie notes that the new provisions as to court dress come in on the 2nd January 2008. (Solicitor-Advocates gain wigs, civil barristers lose them).
Ruthie figures there must therefore be a number of barristers willing to part with their wigs and a number of solicitor-advocates who need them. Ruthie is therefore operating a swap/sale/lend facility on [...]

Scottish taxpayers are doubtless delighted to have funded the £15,000 prosecution of Sergeant Eros aka Stuart Kennedy a student trying to fund his education by performing striptease acts. Whilst his buff butler and hunky handyman have been a big hit with the ladies, it seems two female police officers were less than impressed with his [...]

Many of the respondees to Ruthie’s post about access to the profession have cited finance as one of the major obstacles in coming to the Bar, curiously one of the issues that Neuberger seems to inadequately address (although in deference to Charon I haven’t read the report, merely the media analysis of it.) Perhaps its [...]
